Here's what some concerned residents had to say:

The Sheriff's Department does not understand that they work for the citizens of Dare County, and some of the Deputies and Investigators do not understand that without the help of the community they cannot do their job. The Deputies need to RESPECT the people who pay their Salary! There also needs to be a citizens Volunteer Sheriff's Office Support Unit, to involve the citizens, and to provide assistance to the Sheriff's Office. It is time to change the entire attitude of the Sheriff's Office! Good Luck!" - - Sun, Aug 29, 2010

"The attitude of the deputies. As a youngster I was taught that law enforcement personal was our friend, someone to go to when help is needed. However during these present times, deputies act as if they are better the thoses they serve. Thats not the way public servants are to present themselves."  -- Sat, Sep 4, 2010

"I am of the belief that the county Sheriff is Americas last hope against an out of control federal government. A book I suggest for you is: The County Sheriff, Americas Last Hope, by Sheriff Richard Mack. If elected, what will you do to stand AGAINST the Dept. of Interior/Nat. Park Service/Fed. Government/Audobon Society as they rape and pillage Hatteras Island and it's economy? I am sincere in my request, and am interested in your answer. Although I do not currently live in Dare County, I was born and raised there and lived there for 30 years. I still have family there. I have a vested interest in Dare County.  Thank you in advance for running, and for your response." -- Mon, Sep 6, 2010

"No community involvement with the current sheriffs office. No children programs." -- Fri, Sep 10, 2010

Phillip Ferguson - Town of Duck Police Department Bloodhound Tracking Team

“I met Doug Doughtie in 1989 when we both worked for the Dare County Sheriff’s Office under Sheriff Bert Austin and I worked with Doug until the end of 2002. Doug rose through the ranks to Lieutenant commanding the Criminal and Narcotics Investigations Division. During that time Doug and I worked side by side in patrol and investigations. Doug’s abilities as a law enforcement officer are simply unparalleled; he possesses a stellar work ethic and an encyclopedic knowledge of law enforcement procedure and practices coupled with over 30 years of experience.
More importantly, Doug Doughtie holds an uncanny sense of community, a genuine feel for individuals, and a sterling sense of duty to both. In the countless hours that I have worked with Doug, and in the hundreds of cases, we have handled, he has always conducted himself with integrity, compassion, selflessness, and honor. Doug has touched scores of lives through his work in law enforcement, helping victims find peace, bringing predators to justice, and lending a helping hand, words of advice, and encouragement to the downtrodden. I believe Doug Doughtie has much to offer the people of Dare County as Sheriff and that he will be a fine steward of that Office.”

 Mike Johnson- N.C. State Director

Doug Doughtie has been a friend for over ten years. While serving on the Deacon board at Kitty Hawk Baptist I saw Doug’s heart. He has a servant’s heart, the best kind. I also would visit with Doug at First Flight High School where he was the school resource officer for the Dare County Sheriffs Department and was amazed. Doug displayed to me a remarkable ability to build trust and relationships with the kids. His wife Shannon and his three wonderful boys are a true testament to his leadership abilities. Doug is an extremely capable and credible man.

I have known Doug Doughtie for many years and know how committed he is to the Dare County community. I knew him when he served as detective for the Sheriff's Department but really got to know Doug when he served as my School Resource Officer while I was principal at First Flight High School. Doug is a hard worker who always has the best interest of others in mind. He especially wants the young people in Dare County to grow up in a drug free, healthy environment. He is highly committed to the safety and well being of all citizens in the county. I strongly endorse Doug Doughtie for Dare County Sheriff.
