Here's what some concerned residents had to say:

"Get the deputies to stop acting like robots and more like folks that live here just like the rest of us. A little courtesy goes a long way."  -- Wed, Sep 29, 2010

"Dare County is a place where most are proud to live, to work and to be a part of the community. Through the years the interests of the public and the employees of Dare as a whole, have taken back seat to issues that seem so minuscule to most, for example, continuing to build large buildings that seem unnecessary in a money crunch (ie Manteo 'Senior' Center, where it was dually noted it was a 'necessity' ), the Sheriffs office assisting agencies where they ask for no monetary reimbursement, spending our resources, creating unnecessary wear & tear on property of the county and exercising the use of employees where there already isn't enough to cover the work load already presented to them (ie National Park Service...Outer Banks Hospital, from ambulance rides out of the county and back for certain tests due to the hospital not having proper equipment or being adequately maintenanced or making voluntary commitments into involuntary so 'they' can relinquish their responsibility of the patient and turn it into a Sheriffs office responsibility). To continue on 'most' county employees haven't seen a cost of living raise in years, in fact, no extra money for that matter, instead they are faced with furloughs, no contributions to 401k, assisting in payment with medical insurance, hiring freeze - while the economy and crime take a downward spiral in the wrong direction the county cuts back on emergency services which in turn delays in the response time, making you question the outcome of a situation; leaving few if any 'perks' to be proud to be a county employee. Having no money in the budget the Sheriffs office can't put the man power on the streets to prevent excessive crimes of vehicle break ins, home burglaries and the ever rising drug problem, they are lucky at this point to have a 'partner' in close proximity or on duty with them to assist in any given situation. Instead of Dare taking care of the problems that already exist, some that have been in existence longer than others, they are continuing to create more, spending more money but crying the money blues at the same time. There is a huge gap from your average paid employee to your highest paid, leaving question as to why the average employee would have to work a 2nd or 3rd job to make ends meet, receive no raises with the ever rising cost of living, but yet it never fails they are asking for more and more money from your paycheck to have the essentials and incentives that you were promised when hired, yet the highest paid continues on as usual, never knowing what it is to struggle, to work another job or how that simple $20 the county is now wanting could create such a strain on one's livelihood. It seems the highest paid aren't the ones asked to take time off 'without' pay or better yet to have their salary cut in a 'creative' way as such the county did last year to a few departments within. Or how the deputies put their lives on the line to keep you and yours safe, never knowing what they may face in a shift, running towards situations that most run from, never questioning their actions, just doing because it is their passion, their love, their duty, yet they 'give' the county a designated amount of hours over their 'normal schedule' before they are paid overtime, sounds like 'free' time to me but of course, they have articulated it in a way that simply states 'it works out'. All most ask is a place to work where their voices are heard, the complaints looked upon and a work environment that is pleasant to return to day in and day out, to feel appreciated and on any given day, that their job is respected and not taken for granted. The issues that lie within are not just what you see on the surfaces. Sure, every establishment will have their downfalls but when you have people dreading to return to their job and jumping at the next opportunity that they might not of glanced at several years ago, there is a problem. The residents of Dare need to open their eyes, pay attention to their surroundings, be careful with whom they chose to be their leaders, weigh the pros and cons and use what God gave them, a brain to think with, to sort through the good, the bad and the evil. The Sheriffs office can't be everywhere all the time, residents need to pick up the phone and be pro-active and stop expecting others to do it for them!" -- Sun, Aug 1, 2010

"It's hard to believe we're almost to the end of this campaign and I want to thank everyone who has helped me, whether it was putting up signs, donating money, or just sharing a word of encouragement.  I am humbled by your faith in me.  Election day is right around the corner, and early voting is well underway, so we're into the final push.  I hope you will spread the good word about the things I will do as Sheriff and convince your friends and neighbors to vote for me." Posted by Doug Doughtie for Dare County Sheriff on October 28th, 2010

"Hello Friends.  Thanks to everyone who showed up for the debate at the Colington Fire House on October 8th.  I don't think any of us knew there were so many concerns out there about the Sheriff's Office budget!  Check back soon for updates on future events, and thanks again for your support."Posted by Doug Doughtie for Dare County Sheriff on October 9th, 2010

We have only 32 days left to election day! There was a nice turnout of people in Kitty Hawk for the Meet the Candidates social sponsored by LWV. Thanks to all who braved the rainy weather. Tomorrow we'll be headed back to Hatteras, many people to see and talk with, really looking forward to the meetings that have been set up. Your kindness will not be forgotten. Continue to pass the word, and thanks for your continued support."Posted by Doug Doughtie for Dare County Sheriff on October 3rd, 2010

Eyes on Dare website has a poll about who will be the next Dare County Sheriff and it is very easy to post a vote and if you have the time I would appreciate your vote. Also send the address to your friends and ask them to vote to! I would greatly appreciate it, and thanks for everything you are doing. Word of mouth from someone that a person is a friend of or respects makes a big difference in the way they look at the person being spoken about. Thanks for all your kind words. photoAnnouncing the Chief Deputy

As two good friends, together we have over 60 years of law enforcement experience, with a desire to team up again and make a difference. A good friend said surround yourself with excellent people and really great things can happen. As the Chief of Police in Ahoskie for years until his retirement, it's a great start. It's our future! I had a wonderful time on Saturday with good friends at a get phototogether for Bob Steinburg in Nags Head. It was good to see some new faces in the crowd and always a pleasure to see some of the regulars. Getting geared to start walking neighborhoods. Manteo will be first on the agenda and we will let you know about where we will be day by day. Looking forward to meeting new friends and seeing old ones. Thanks for everything.Posted by Doug Doughtie for Dare County Sheriff on July 20th, 2010
